Email: Jonathan Elias Slideshow: Meet Jonathan Elias Watch: Full Interview With Jonathan Award-winning journalist, Jonathan Elias anchors WBZ-TV News at 5pm and 5:30pm and he reports for WBZ-TV News at 11pm. Elias joined WBZ-TV in 2007 and in 2008 received two Emmy Awards for On-Camera Talent Anchor and On-Air Talent Reporter.
Elias joins WBZ-TV from KNXV-TV in Phoenix, AZ where for five years he served as the main anchor for ABC15 News. He field anchored stories including Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita, and the sniper shootings in Washington D.C. Elias was named 2006 Anchor of the Year by the Arizona Associated Press Broadcasters Association. His investigative work also earned him the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award, a National Headliner Award, an Investigative Reporters and Editors certificate and a local Emmy. He and his wife Holly formed the "Welcome Home Project" to honor and recognize returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Prior to KNXV-TV, Elias was the main anchor at KCBS-TV in Los Angeles, CA. He won a Golden Mike for his work during the Jewish Day Care Center shooting. Some of the other stories covered during his five years included the crash of Alaskan Airlines flight 261, and the effort to construct the World War 11 Memorial in Washington D.C.
Elias came to Los Angeles from Minneapolis/St. Paul WCCO-TV. He was the 5pm anchor and 10pm reporter. He was a part of the team that won a George Foster Peabody Award. He also won Emmys for his anchoring and reporting. While at WCCO he traveled the country covering Oklahoma City bombing, the crash of TWA flight 800, O.J. Simpson murder trial, Northridge earthquake and the Grand Forks flooding.
In the early 90's Elias worked at KOVR-TV in Sacramento California. He headed up the Investigative unit there and won two Emmy awards for his work exposing a national charity that was shut down by the state as a result. He covered some of the biggest stories in California history including the L.A. Riots, Oakland Hills Fire, Landers Earthquake, and more than half dozen huge wildfires. The Associated Press named him "Best Reporter" in the state in 1991.
In the late 80's Elias was working at WBRC-TV in Birmingham, Alabama. Both the Associated Press and United Press International named him "Reporter of the Year", he also won an Associated Press Award for his coverage of the Huntsville tornado. He began his on air career as a reporter at KCPM-TV in Chico, California in 1988.
Jonathan has a B.A. in history from California State University at Northridge. He and his wife, Holly, are high school sweethearts who met when the two were just five years old. The couple has a thirteen-year-old daughter and a ten-year-old son. In addition to having fun with his family, Jonathan enjoys golf, martial arts, weightlifting, rock climbing, and target shooting. Now and then, he likes to "pick the banjo" or play the piano.
