WBZ reporter Peg Rusconi is racing in her 6th Boston Marathon and her 11th marathon overall as she has previously competed in Boston, Las Vegas, New York City, and Columbus. Peg is running for two causes: First, she is blogging about how to get back into marathons for busy moms who need some tips from one of their own. Second, she is donating to Children's Hospital and Massachusetts Eye and Ear. Peg trains along the Charles River, on the back half of the actual Marathon course, and on the Harvard track.
The I-Team's Kathy Curran and Team "Big Nick" are running in memory of Nick Xiarhos. Nick was a former Marine corporal from Yarmouth, MA, who was killed this past July in Afghanistan. The charity that they are running for is the "Nicholas Xiarhos Memorial Fund" which provides assistance for Cape Cod troops and their families. Kathy is also running to raise awareness for Polycystic Kidney Disease, which was the disease attributed to the recent passing of her mother. Despite running two past marathons and swearing she would not run any more, 2009 was a year full of loss for Kathy, so she decided to run in 2010 to honor Nick as well as her mom. Kathy trains on her own and with the L street running club in South Boston.
WBZ reporter Paul Burton is running the Boston Marathon to raise scholarship money for the Ron Burton Training Village to help send more children from Boston to the camp. In addition to fundraising, he is running with a team from the camp. The mission of the camp, which was founded by his father Ron Burton in 1985, is to take at-risk children and bring them to an environment rich with positivity allowing them to achieve success in all areas of life. Paul is continually training whether it is at the Ron Burton camp site or around the city.
