Online Registration For The Boston Marathon Begins

BOSTON (WBZ) ― It's the time many runners have been waiting for all year. Online registration for the 112th Boston Marathon begins on Wednesday.

The Boston Athletic Association has launched the registration and set a maximum field size of 25,000 runners for next year's Patriots' Day race. Last year, 23,869 runners took part in the Boston Marathon, according to the B.A.A.

Applicants must meet certain time standards for their age group on or after September 23, 2006 to qualify for a marathon number. You can find the qualifying standards on the B.A.A. Web site.

The 2008 Boston Marathon will have a two-wave start again. The first wave of runners will start at 10 a.m. and the second wave will start 30 minutes later.

This year's marathon weekend will also host the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for the women's marathon. The race will take place the Sunday before the Boston Marathon in downtown Boston and Cambridge.

The top three finishers of the race will represent the United States in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
