No Logan Changes Yet, With Delta-Northwest Merger
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Delta airlines said Thursday that it will be 'business as usual' at Logan Airport while details of the newly announced merger with Northwest Airlines are worked out.
Delta and Northwest won antitrust approval for their merger on Wednesday. In its ruling the Justice Department said the creation of what will be the world's largest airline will help consumers without hurting competition.
The new airline would retain the Delta brand and be headquartered in Atlanta, where Delta is based now.
At
Logan Airport, where both Delta and Northwest currently operate, things will remain the same for the time being. "Boston customers will not see immediate changes in operations of Delta or Northwest," a company statement read. "Customers should continue to check in and do business directly with the airline operating their flight, just as they did prior to the merger."
Right now, Delta operates out of Terminal A and Northwest operates in Terminal E. It is unclear what the merger will ultimately mean for terminal assignments.
The only thing now standing between the two airlines and the deal closing is a trial in San Francisco next week in a lawsuit brought by 28 travelers. Northwest CEO Doug Steenland has said he does not believe the lawsuit will stop the deal.
The companies have said they can cut $2 billion a year in expenses once they combine.
