Losing a job is not usually a reason to celebrate.
But many people are using the excuse of getting a pink slip to party with others who are suddenly out of work.
A pink slip party offs job seekers a chance to network, and offer each other support.
"It's a way for a community to come together after as something as painful as layoffs," said Laura Fitto. "We had just had big wave in January where seven of my closest friends were laid off in a single week."
They don't really know each other so they where name tags and network and show off their portfolios.
Rachel Happe says she went to the party to socialize with people in her same shoes and talk shop.
Pink Slip Parties are picking up steam all over the city. They offer a way to job hunt and put people in touch with job recruiters.
They exchange career resources. They also have a web page projected on a wall where outside companies post job opportunities. Job seekers can post their qualifications and link to their blogs and resumes.
For many who were just laid off, a pink slip party offers optimism and hope of landing a new job.
"Everyone is contributing and not hoarding leads to themselves," said Erik Proulx. "Everyone wants people to succeed."
As Pink Slip Parties grow they plan to hold formal workshops, critique resumes and have speakers about keeping their job hunt organized.
