Marian Anderson, a 73-year-old resident of Manchester, N.J., is having problems trying to find a crew with enough time to remove two old oak trees that fell in her yard during a nor'easter last weekend. "They tell me they're swamped and will get out as soon as they can, but who knows when that will be," she said. "I really hated this winter; I truly did. It caused nothing but trouble."

Feds Shut Down Small Bank In Ohio

Regulators have shut down a small bank in Ohio, boosting to 31 the number of bank failures in the U.S. so far this year. The fines are for violating a provision in Massachusetts' landmark 2006 health care law that requires larger companies to offer insurance or pay an annual fine of $295 per full-time employee. In 2008, 807 of 23,128 eligible Massachusetts firms were found liable for the fine, known under the law as the "fare share contribution." They were on the hook for a total of $8.6 million, or an average of $10,663 per employer. In 2007, 1,045 firms were found liable for $10.5 million, or an average of $10,047 each. CEO Joe Tucci was 23 percent lower than in 2008, a reflection of lower equity awards and cuts to the data-storage company's executive salaries. The company's proxy filing late Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission shows that EMC valued Tucci's 2009 pay package at $9.0 million, compared with $11.7 million in 2008, according to calculations by The Associated Press. The bulk of the pay package came from restricted stock and stock options, which totaled nearly $7 million, compared with just over $9 million last year. About half of the restricted stock and options awarded to Tucci last year are performance-based and are doled out depending on how well EMC's finances fare.

Wind Farm Plans Stir Up Storm Over Military Radar

The U.S. military is growing increasingly concerned that proposed wind farms can disrupt or block radar designed to detect threats and protect America's skies, a problem that is stalling the alternative energy projects around the country. A top U.S. general told Congress on Thursday that federal agencies need to work better together on a formal vetting process for the wind projects to prevent them from being built where they will interfere with radar defenses. Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart, head of U.S. Northern Command, said a number of projects raise "real concerns" involving radar interference, and he suggested that requiring companies to do early checks during the approval process for such obstruction may be needed.
