Tough Economy Produces More 'Stay At Home Dads'

SACRAMENTO (CBS) ― In today's economy it's becoming more common to see men stay home from work to take care of the kids.

CBS station KOVR-TV looked into the trend that is reversing roles at home.

In the movie "Mr. Mom," Michael Keaton's character gets laid off and is forced to stay at home with the kids while his wife provides for the family. If only Hollywood only knew just how prophetic that plot would come to be.

Chris Smith of Sacramento is playing the same role.

Chris and his wife, Sandra, have four boys. Just months after their twins arrived, Chris was injured on the job and Sandra was laid off.

The Smiths say they would have to spend about $1,800 per month for daycare for their four boys if Chris didn't stay at home.

"(It) didn't make sense with daycare costs; he sees this as his job," explains Sandra.

One study says 80% of those who have been laid off are men, KOVR-TV reported.

As many men are stepping into the 'stay at home dads' role, they're even starting groups for stay-at-home dads where fathers can share ideas and connect with others in the same situation.
