the highest level in 2 1/2 years as first-time buyers rushed to take
advantage of an expiring tax credit. Home sales nationwide are
now up nearly 37 percent from their bottom in January, data Monday
showed, though they are still 16 percent below the peak in autumn 2005.
At the current sales pace, there is only a 7-month supply of homes on
the market and in some areas there are bidding wars.

debate Sunday as a former National Institutes of Health chief urged
women to ignore guidelines that delay the start of breast cancer
screenings. Republicans pointed to the guidelines as evidence
the Democrats' proposals for a health care overhaul would yield limits
on mammograms and a rationing of care. Democrats dismissed those
worries and said Republicans were stoking fears without facts.

prisoners for an Israeli soldier held for more than three years by the
Islamic militant group, a Palestinian familiar with the talks said
Monday. Israeli President Shimon Peres, who met with Egypt's
president in Cairo Sunday, confirmed progress in the negotiations to
free captured soldier Sgt. Gilad Schalit, but Israeli officials refused
to comment further. Hamas' deputy political leader, Moussa Abu Marzouk,
also said "there is progress" in the talks.

their mission Monday to take care of some odd jobs at the International

ready for the spacewalk. To everyone's relief, the valve to the water
pouch went back on tightly.
The
National Association of Realtors says home sales rose 10.1 percent in
October, spurred by a tax credit for first-time homebuyers. Analysts
had been expecting a 1.4 percent increase in sales. Stocks had
been rising sharply prior to the report as the dollar weakened. The
falling dollar is boosting commodities prices and energy and material
stocks. A weaker dollar makes commodities cheaper for foreign buyers.
The Democratic measures would leave 12 million or more eligible Americans uninsured. Many middle-class families who'd now be required to buy coverage would still find the premiums a stretch, even with government aid. A new federal fund to provide temporary coverage for people with health problems would quickly run out of cash.
