'Tis the season of the bargain hunter.
Americans are making their holiday lists and checking them twice, to see what they can get on sale. The National Retail Federation released new survey numbers Tuesday. Two-thirds of Americans say the economy will affect their holiday plans.
84% of them will spend less, 55% will shop sales more and 41% will use more coupons.
"I actually just got one today for Sephora for 20 percent off, so I've already started to think about gifts I can get from that particular store," says shopper Ria Calong-Russo.
One retail expert predicts retailers will cut back on inventory this year because retail sales are expected to be down. He says consumers should start hunting for what they want, now.
"The advice to the consumer is to always be selective. If you find something you want - buy it. Don't hold out for the very last second. It may be there. It might not be there," says John Macht, of The Macht Group.
He also says people should shop luxury stores this season because they're having blockbuster sales after such a lackluster year. He says shoppers should have a strategy this season but they shouldn't rush through their holiday shopping.
"I certainly wouldn't panic. This is not the right mode to panic. When you panic you make mistakes. You end up kicking yourself later that you got something you panicked about," Macht says.
