Do You Know Where Your Donation Dollars Are Going?
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
"We are actually purchasing something for charity," said Mary Garvey, who WBZ found buying a gift for a charity on her lunch break.
'Tis the season to help those less fortunate, but do you know where your donated dollars are actually going? When WBZ asked Mary, she said, "Not 100 percent."
On Tuesday, the Massachusetts Attorney General
released a report regarding charities -- specifically those that hire solicitors to raise money.
Keep in mind, the
Better Business Bureau suggests a charity should put 65 percent of the money raised toward their stated cause, but in the report, there were many cases where that was not happening.
One example is the American Lung Association. According to the A.G.'s report, they contracted with a solicitor and raised $315,287 and only $25 ended up with the charity. If your doing the math that's 0.01 percent.
The Attorney General's office offers up advice on
what to look for in a charity before you give your money. They strongly encourage you to give, but to first understand how your money will be used.
