Cheap Tips Save On Home Heating Costs

Experts say homeowners can seal heating joints in the pipes themselves using only a paintbrush, which can help cut heating bills.

As temperatures head in the opposite direction from heating oil prices, many energy saving products and services are hot sellers.
WBZ's Ron Sanders spent time with subcontractors for ABCD, Action for Boston Community Development, which helps eligible households lower heating costs. Some of the things they do,
you can do yourself such as wrapping heating ducts and installing weather stripping.
Mark Atkins, of A & M General Contractors, said some of the materials needed for winterizing can be found at Home Depot and can be installed in a weekend.
So, Sanders went to a Home Depot in West Roxbury where manager Ray Reynolds showed him products under $50 that can cut energy costs.
Number one on the list, programmable thermostats, which Reynolds says can help you save 33 percent and sell for less than $40.

Door sweeps can prevent drafts and be installed with a half dozen screws. Most heating energy loss is through doors and windows, says Reynolds.
Inexpensive window insulation kits are also available.
