Economy May Be Taking Toll On Your Stress Level

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The economic crisis is not only taking a toll on our investments and wallets, it's also affecting our stress levels.

"It's kind scary about how our country and all the other countries are taking a downturn," said Jennifer Nelson, a worried investor. "I'm kind of scared to see what's going to happen next."

A new survey finds that nearly half of Americans are now worried about their family's basic needs and that stress can lead to lead to headaches, unhealthy behavior as well as other physical and mental symptoms.

Dr. Herbert Benson of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine at Mass General Hospital explains, "Chronic stress does affect people in major ways, it leads to heart attacks, more profound depression and other diseases ten to be made worse by stress."

Dr. Benson is an expert on relaxation techniques. He says people need to find a healthy way to get their mind off the economy. "Yoga, tai chi and jogging all help people break the cycle and their mind off that tack and let the body revert to a more quiet state."

If you or someone you know seems overly anxious or depressed, a local organization is sponsoring free mental health screenings all over the country this Friday, Oct. 10.

If you'd like more information about the free screenings, visit MentalHealthScreening.org or MGH'S Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine, log onto bhimgh.org.
