Flat Screen TVs Blend In As Trendy Home Decor
by Paula Ebben
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Flat screen televisions are great to look at when they're on but some don't like what they do to their home's decor the rest of the time.
Companies are coming up with new ways to make that big screen look like it really fits in.
Interior designer Cathy Whitlock says more people are dressing up their TVs with different fashions. For instance, customers can buy a piece of mirrored glass to go over the front.
"It's a transparent glass when the TV is on, you're just watching TV," Whitlock said. "When it is off it looks like a really smoky mirror."
How much does it cost? Art DVDs are available online, usually between $15 and $25. The mirrored glass can go as high as $700. And a frame by itself can range from a few hundred dollars to hundreds of thousands, if customers choose an antique.
Homeowner Scott Strazick loves the way his flat screen television looks thanks to the special frame he got for it.
"The frame cost about a thousand dollars in total, and I definitely think it's worth it," Strazick said. "If I hadn't gotten the frame, I would have had to have gotten some other piece of furniture to help contain the TV."
Not quite sure what to do with your TV?
FrameMyTV.com is based in Haverhill. The company's founder Kevin Hancock says they can provide customers with a frame that compliments just about any décor.
"Antique gold, pewter, antique copper is a very popular one, walnut, light cherry, but if someone wants to do custom color-matching we can do that," Hancock said.
If customers decide to try the mirrored glass, experts suggest trying it out before they buy it to make sure they don't feel like it compromises the TV's picture.
