Relief At Gas Pump Saves Drivers Cash
By Reporter Jim Smith
BRIDGEWATER (WBZ) ―
While the auto industry waits for money, drivers continue to save cash at the gas pumps.
Prices in Massachusetts dropped another 10 cents last week to a statewide average of $1.74 a gallon, which is the lowest gas prices have been in almost five years.
However, drivers really do have to shop around for the best deal because the price range can vary as much as 50 cents.
In some towns south of Boston where the lower costs are fueling a price war drivers are the big winners.
Welcome to the front lines of the Route 18 gas war -- a strip of road between Abington, Whitman and Bridgewater where prices average well below that state average of $1.74.
How about $1.55? That's the price at one station in Bridgewater Center.
WBZ found most prices on the section of Route 18 in the $1.50 range.
It's not exactly news that customers are happy about lower prices, but many of them are still nervous that they will go up again.
"I believe we all know that it will go back up eventually," one driver said.
The head of Gulf Oil, which is based in Newton, says gas might even drop to $1 a gallon again, though he fears prices could go back to the gas-guzzling days.
In the meantime, drivers are enjoying low prices, which could be seen as an early Christmas present.
