The holiday -- it seems everywhere you turn, it's spend, spend, spend. But this year, some of that spending could pay you back.
It's not often you see someone excited about buying kitty litter. That's because this shopper is getting a $5 gift card from Target, just for stocking up on something he needs.
This year, retailers hope free gift cards will help get you in the door, and once you have the card in your hand, you're more likely to come back.
At Target, the deals change every week. If you buy two packages of paper plates at $4.74 each, you get a $5 gift card, and who doesn't need paper plates with the family around for the holidays.
Or for someone who likes to cook, the Kitchen Aid mixer is the ideal gift. The mixer cost $199.99, but it comes with a $20 gift card.
At Toys R Us, you'll get a $10 gift card if you buy baby formula or Disney movies.
Buy $30 worth of iTunes gift cards and they'll throw in an extra $5.
And if your kids must have the latest and greatest video games, you can bring your old video game systems and software into Toys R Us, and you'll get a gift card for its estimated value.
Best Buy also has a trade-in program. One shopper got $235 for his old laptop.
And here's a secret tip on one of the hottest items for the holiday the iPod touch. They never go on sale, but on Black Friday, Best Buy will be offering a $30 gift card on every iTouch.
For the store, it's an investment that pays off. "To maintain the customer, keep them coming back to Best Buy, build loyalty with them," said Kevin Koufos of Best Buy.
And this holiday season, a little loyalty goes a long way.
Some online retailers are also offering gift cards. For example, at L.L. Bean, spend $25 or more from now until Christmas and you'll get a $10 gift card.
