What do George Clooney, Harrison Ford, and Al Gore have in common? They have just enough gray hair to make them look handsomely distinguished. But when the gray starts to move beyond the temples, some men start feeling old. Now moreĀ and moreĀ are discovering a fairly simple way to hang on to that movie-star look.
For years, David Cramer has embraced his gray hair. "I've had gray hair ever since I was about 24," he said. "That's about 14 years ago." Now at 38, David is almost completely gray and he doesn't like the way it makes him look, or feel. "I feel like it's washing my face out."
David decided to do something about it. He's part of a growing trend of men using hair color to turn back the clock.
Many industry experts say looking younger can be important to a man's career. "I think men are more comfortable with the notion of products, of taking care of yourself," said Adam Rappoport of
GQ Magazine.
David, like many men, didn't want to lose the gray entirely. So he turned to one of several products that bring back some natural hair color, without covering all of the gray. Those men can now use new formulas created by Companies like
Redken,
Just for Men and
M-I-N.
Celebrity hair-stylist, Losi, says these products do a great job. "Before, there was only one way to color men's hair," she explained. "They would put just one flat color on it and having one flat color makes it look like you dyed your hair," she added.
Losi says the new tones blend with a man's natural hair color and some can be applied at home. "You wait 5 minutes and then you shampoo it out. It's just that easy," she said, snapping her fingers.
The color is usually semi-permanent so it slowly washes out after each was. Losi recommends men have it done every time they get their hair cut.
David was thrilled with his results. He said he felt years younger without looking like he just dyed his hair. "It came out much better than I expected," he said with a smile on his face. "It's very natural. You can still see some of the gray, but it's not as washed-out looking."
The price of salon color treatments vary. Home hair color typically costs less than ten dollars.
