Are You Getting What You Pay For At The Pump?
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
As the statewide average for gas prices goes down more than 40 cents below the record highs in July, many drivers are wondering if they are really getting what they paid for.
State inspectors are responsible for checking out stations and making sure drivers aren't getting lured into something that may seem like a bargain but isn't.
Each year, the state's
Division of Standards inspectors check all 3,300 gas stations in Massachusetts to make sure the pumps are accurate, and that when a pump says it is pumping a gallon of gas - it really is.
Many gas station owners are just as concerned about the accuracy, because errors can just as easily go in favor of the customers.
Inspectors are also checking on stations offering a lower gas price to customers who pay with cash or buy a car wash.
"What we want to do is that those conditions of sale are visibly conspicuous to anybody before they get into the station," said Charles Carroll with the Division of Standards.
State regulations already prohibit gas stations from charging extra for credit card users, though they do allow for a discount for cash customers. It's really a matter of semantics.
