Mass. Drivers Can Size Up Auto Insurance Rates

Web Site Compares Massachusetts Auto Insurance Rates

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The state has launched a new Web site to help consumers compare auto insurance rates as Massachusetts switches to a more competitive market.

The site shows consumers the range of prices and discounts they may qualify for from rival companies, and tells them how to contact auto insurers and agents for rate quotes.

"What we're trying to do is provide a trusted source that can provide fair information to consumers across the state," said Daniel Crane, the undersecretary for Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation.

Drivers can generate a list of sample premiums by entering data about themselves and the vehicle they drive. It compares the rates of 19 insurance carriers in the state.

"You can get the quote that will assist you off our Web site probably within 30 seconds," Crane said.

The first people eligible for the new competitive system are now receiving their renewal forms. The state is encouraging people to start comparing right away. Consumers will want to take the top three to five quotes from the Web site and further investigate what kinds of discounts each offers.

The site went online Sunday and is available on the state Division of Insurance's Web site, www.mass.gov/autorates.

It has already seen nearly 200,000 hits.

This month marks the start of the annual auto insurance policy renewal process. For the first time in 30 years, Massachusetts drivers have more choices because of the switch to a system dubbed "managed competition."
