Reebok Pays Record $1M Fine For Recalled Bracelet

BOSTON (AP) ― Reebok has agreed to pay a 1 million dollar fine for importing and distributing charm bracelets that contained toxic levels of lead and resulted in the death of a 4-year-old boy.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says the civil penalty is the largest ever for a violation of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. It follows a 2006 recall of more than one-half million of the Chinese made bracelets.

The bracelets were provided as free gifts by Canton-based Reebok with the purchase of various styles of children's footwear. The Minneapolis boy died in March 2006 after swallowing the bracelet's heart-shaped pendant.

A spokeswoman for Reebok denied violating federal law in the settlement agreement signed last week.
