4 More Salmonella Cases Reported In Massachusetts

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Four additional cases of salmonella have been linked to a nationwide outbreak associated with certain types of raw tomatoes, state health officials said Monday.

That brings the total number of cases identified in Massachusetts to 21. At least five people have been hospitalized.

Two of the new cases were in Suffolk County, the state Department of Public Health reported. One each was is Middlesex County and Essex County.

DPH officials believe all five became ill from late May through mid-June.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has advised consumers to avoid eating certain raw red plum, raw red Roma, raw red round tomatoes and products containing those tomatoes.

Cherry and grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached and tomatoes grown in Massachusetts are considered safe to eat.

Nationwide, more than 800 cases of salmonella have been reported since April. No deaths have officially been blamed on the illness.

The source of the outbreak is still unknown.

In Massachusetts, there have been eight victims from Suffolk County, six from Middlesex County, four from Norfolk County as well as one each from Plymouth, Worcester and Essex counties.
