Economy Could Melt Number Of Skiers Hitting Slopes
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
When you live to ski or snowboard, even the first few inches of man-made snow can feel like a winter wonderland. "It's like Christmas I didn't sleep at all last night,'" said one snowboarding fan.
If this is Christmas, there's a potential Grinch this year -- the economy.
"Hopefully everyone still has money to come out skiing," said Chris Kitchen if the
Nashoba Valley Ski Area. "It's a great sport."
At the Boston Ski and Snowboard Expo, Donna McCarthy took advantage of free lift tickets offered by
Cranmore Mountain. "Ski no matter what, but looking around for deals," she said.
"People are looking for that value," said Kathy Bennett of Cranmore Mountain. "They don't want to give it up, they just want to be more judicious about how they spend their money."
At
Wildcat Mountain's booth, an offer of an extra free day on a multi-day card sold out before the Expo was half over. "I think in this economy they are aggressively looking for the discounts," said Thomas Prindle of Wildcat Mountain.
Jill Blondek says her family will be looking for ways to get the most skiing for their money. "You have to pick and choose between just taking a day trip, and not staying over night, because so much of your money's going to be spent on the hotel. Those are some of things that have not dropped down."
Any concerns about the economy go hand in hand with the perennial concern for ski areas -- will there be enough snow? Because without the white stuff, they can't bring in the green.
