Sony Recalling Thousands Of Laptop Computers

TOKYO (WBZ) ― Sony is recalling 440,000 units of Vaio laptop computers worldwide due to faulty parts that could trigger overheating. About 73,000 of those were sold in the United States and subject to a recall by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Sony Corp. said Thursday that the recalls involve 19 models of Vaio TZ laptop series manufactured between May 2007 and July 2008, including three export models.

The Tokyo-based consumer electronics company says a faulty wiring connecting the main body of the laptop and its display could cause overheating near a power plug or the rim of the screen, sometimes distorting the shape of the computer.

There have been 15 reports of overheating, including one customer who suffered a minor burn.

The affected models include the VAIO VGN-TZ100 series, VGN-TZ200 series, VGN-TZ300 series and VGN-TZ2000 series.

Sony says not all units are part of the recall. To determine if your computer is affected contact Sony at (888) 526-6219 or visit the Sony support web site. Be prepared to supply your product code and serial number located on the bottom of the laptop.
