"Indestructible" Cell Phones Put To The Test

BOSTON (WBZ) ― We rely on cell phones for just about everything - directions, pictures, e-mail, even the web.

But if it can't stand up to wear and tear, it's worthless.

WBZ's David Wade tested two new cell phones that claim to be nearly indestructible - Verizon's GzOne and Nextel's i580.

Wade and several others bounced the phones off streets, sidewalks, puddles, and landmarks. Both powered back up and kept working.

Then he took them to a local day care center.

They survived baths in a sandbox and a sink. They were also thrown down a slide and some stairs.

A young boy named Patrick had five minutes alone with each phone.

Both survived, although the Nextel did suffer a cracked screen.

For the final test, Wade went up on the roof of WBZ's studios and dropped each phone 20 feet to the ground.

Both fell apart on impact. But once they were put back together, both continued to work. (The Nextel did have a hard time getting a signal after the drop though)

Both phones are in the $100-to-$200 dollar range with a service contract.
