BOSTON (WBZ) ― Now that the Boston police Mounted Unit has been disbanded due to budget cuts and city layoffs, some are wondering what will happen to the horses.

Susan wrote on WBZ's Curious Web site: "With the announcement about the Boston Mounted Police unit being disbanded, what is the plan to care for the former police horses? The officers can transfer (potentially) to other positions or even towns, but the horses have no such option and they have served the city as loyally as the officers have."

The answer is Boston police are trying to adopt out the horses.

The department is looking for people who have a proven history of caring for and looking after horses.

Officers have set up a hotline for those interested in adopting the Mounted Unit horses. The hotline's number is 617-343-4692.

There are 13 horses that are part of the Mounted Unit.
