Curious About Blue Line's Fishy Smell, Tunnel Leak

BOSTON (WBZ) ― What was fishy about the aquarium MBTA stop was that it stunk like dead fish.

Actually, one "T" rider told us it smelled worse than Tilapia on the tracks, "It's like they have dead bodies buried under the tracks."

Rich from Boston asked on our Curiosity Web page: "Why does the aquarium MBTA station smell so bad?"

Well, it is right next to the harbor. But, when we stopped by, we saw stinky harbor water pouring into a dark tunnel. That was a few days ago.

On Wednesday, I went to speak with Anna Barry, the MBTA Director of Subway Operations. She says it was a substantial leak that has now been fixed. She says there are smaller leaks, but the smell is gone... for now. "This is an unreinforced, very old tunnel. So, every once in a while that will happen" said Barry.

One stop away in East Boston, Maverick Station has just been renovated. But Mac from Boston says: "It was never finished adequately and now it's leaking!"

When we went inside, we found it's best if you're wearing boots. Water was splashing all over.

The MBTA says the station is under the water table. It says there were leaks right away and it had the contractor seal the leaks with a product it used at other leaky stations. It didn't work. I asked Anna Barry why this problem wasn't nipped in the bud while the renovations were still being completed. Here response: "We applied a leak product. In the end it wasn't as good as we thought it would be."

The fix may cost taxpayers several thousand dollars. The "T" told me it hasn't figured out if it's the T's own fault or the contractors.

Those are some of the Blue Line problems that had you seeing red. Let us know what else makes your Curious about your travails on the tracks.
