Letterman Upset After McCain Cancels Appearance

GOP Presidential Candidate Opts For Couric Interview Instead

NEW YORK (CBS) ― "Late Show" host David Letterman spared no wrath on Republican presidential hopeful John McCain Wednesday night, after the senator opted to do an interview with "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric," rather than attend his scheduled appearance with Letterman.

"I'm more than a little disappointed by this behavior," Letterman said. "We're suspending the campaign. Suspending it because there's an economic crisis, or because the poll numbers are sliding?"

Early in the show, Letterman informed the audience that McCain had called him to apologize for the cancellation, saying that he was in a rush to catch a plane and return to Washington D.C. to address the economic crisis.

However, later in the show, Letterman was told that the GOP candidate was still in the city – a mere five blocks away – getting set up for an interview with Couric. Letterman showed the audience a live feed of McCain and Couric during their taping.

Letterman, never one to shy from a joke, spent the remainder of his show making cracks about the candidate. He also talked about the cancellation with guest Keith Olbermann.

"Maybe if he hadn't taken two years off to run for president, he wouldn't have to rush to Washington now to deal with the crisis," Letterman said.

"But when you call up, and you call up at the last minute and you cancel a show -- ladies and gentleman -- that's starting to smell…," Letterman said. "It makes me think something is going haywire with the campaign."

Letterman then questioned why McCain's vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin, was not sent to fill in for McCain, asking, "Where's your second-string quarterback?"
