Local Sculptor Beautifies Boston's First Night

BOSTON (WBZ) ― A local ice sculptor is getting ready for this year's Boston's First Night.

Donald Chappelle has the type of job that captivates people.

"You get one shot at it and if the weather doesn't work you have to work that as well," he said.

For the past 22 years Chapelle's artwork has helped beautify Boston's First Night.

For First Night 2008, Chapelle is creating a sand tiger shark.

Putting it together is a long cold delicate process. Each block of ice needs to be carefully handled.

"Once they are fused together it's pretty much indestructible," Chapelle said. "You could drive a truck into it and you would hurt the truck more than the sculptor."

His 10-ton sand tiger shark will be completed Wednesday and then Chappalle will move on to his First Night project.

"I'm starting a piece that deals with the everglades," he said.

And what is Chapalle's favorite part of First Night?

"Soaking in a tub after it's all over," he said. "That's what I look forward to the most."
