Artist Tunes Up For First Night Performance
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
First Night is still two-and-a-half
weeks away, but dozens of artists are busy fine-tuning their performances for
the big night.
Native-American flute-maker Hawk Henries
of the Nipmuc Nation will be performing at First Night again this year -- hoping
to share his talents and knowledge with future generations.
He performs throughout the country and teaches flute-making workshops like the one
at the Boston Day and Evening
Academy in Roxbury. "I
play primitive instruments from all around the world, drums from Zimbabwe...
Flutes from China
and I talk about those things and how they are metaphorically like people,"
Henries said.
Henries' mission is not only to show
students the physical art of making instruments, but to teach them important
spiritual lessons about the world and themselves. "All peoples and cultures can
contribute to making the world a healthier place."
"I learned how to make a flute from
scratch and how to interact with people," said student Jay Martinez.
"I learned how it felt to build
something from scratch, because I never built anything, so it felt good," said student
Shavonne Brown.
WBZ is proud to be the official
sponsor of First Night. Click here for more information on the festivities.
