FDA Warns Against Buying Baby Formula From China
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
The FDA is urging parents with babies to avoid using
infant formula from China after receiving reports of babies from that country developing kidney stones.
Although it is not approved for importation, the baby formula is sold in ethnic grocery stores, in cities such as Boston, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The formula is said to contain
melamine, which is a chemical used in plastics.
So far, there have been no reports of illnesses in the U.S. "We're concerned that there may be some infant formula that may have gotten into the United States illegally and may be on the ethnic market," Janice Oliver, deputy director of the
FDA's food safety program, told the Associated Press. "No infant formula from China should be entering the United States, but in the past we have found it on at least one occasion."
The FDA says that the domestic supply of infant formula is safe.
