The kitchen at Dunkin' Donuts University was abuzz Thursday in a bakery battle. At stake the chance to have your own designer donut sold in Dunkin' Donuts stores across the country.
The event was the official bake-off for the 'Create Dunkin's Next Donut' contest. The 12 finalists were picked from thousands of people who submitted their original donut designs online.
Among the finalists: the marshmallow filled sm'OREO, a hazelnut and chocolate concoction called the Tour de France, and Grandma's Blueberry Maple.
For the last several weeks, the public has been able to vote for their favorite creation online. Today, the creators faced the toughest judges Dunkin' Donuts own culinary team.
Contestants had one hour to bake, fill and frost their donuts in the kitchen at Dunkin' Donuts University in Braintree. Then, they presented their treats to the judges.
The winner will be determined by a combination of the public vote and judge's taste test. The title won't be awarded until National Donut Day, which if you didn't know is June 5. The winner not only gets their donut in Dunkin' racks everywhere, but also a $12,000 grand prize.
