Group Wants Boycott Of Region's Biggest Egg Farm
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
An animal protection agency is holding a protest on Thursday, demanding that some of the region's biggest grocery chains stop selling eggs from New England's largest egg supplier.
Mercy for Animals claims that
Quality Egg of New England, based in Turner, Maine, is raising its hens in deplorable conditions.
According to
Mercy for Animals, secret footage of the farm shows birds being kept in confined cages, workers snapping hens' necks and birds being put in confined places, where they allegedly dehydrate and starve.
Mercy for Animals is asking that Shaw's Supermarkets and Stop and Shop stop selling these eggs, based on the alleged treatment of the farm's hens.
According to Quality Egg's Web site, the company adheres to USDA guidelines and isĀ
UEP (United Egg Producers) Animal Welfare Certified in the production and delivery of their products.
