Gloucester Residents Told To Boil Water
Meanwhile, Boil Order Lifted In Milford
GLOUCESTER (WBZ) ―
Gloucester residents and businesses were told Friday they need to boil their water before drinking it. The boil order went into effect after testing found chlorine levels were too low to effectively treat against bacteria.
No harmful bacteria have been found in the water at this time, but without enough chlorine, there is a risk it could develop.
Under a boil water order, all tap water should be boiled for at least one minute before it is used for drinking, cooking, making ice, bathing or brushing teeth.
Health officials are also urging residents to get rid of any ice cubes and juice that were made with tap water after August 15.
Restaurants were ordered to boil water for five minutes before using it to prepare food.
The city hopes to have the problem resolved soon and will keep residents updated on
the town web site throughout the weekend. At this point there is no plan to distribute free bottled water.
Friday evening a
boil order was lifted in Milford, after residents there dealt with nearly two weeks of contaminated water. Part of that town had their water declared clean earlier this week, but about 500 households were still without clean water until Friday night.
