NH Reports First Death Linked To Beef Recall
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
A New Hampshire resident has died and officials say it is related to the recent
ground beef recall.
The patient's identity has not been revealed. The patient is the first person in New Hampshire to die from complications associated with the contaminated beef recall.
On Saturday, Fairbanks Farms in Ashville, NY, which packages beef for stores like Shaw's, BJ's, Trader Joe's and Price Chopper, recalled over 500,000 pounds of beef due to E. coli concerns.
These products were packaged on September 15 and 16, 2009, and may have been labeled at the retail stores with a sell-by date from September 19 through 28, 2009, unless otherwise noted.

There have been three other cases of illness in New Hampshire related to the contaminated ground beef, but those patients have all recovered, health officials said.
E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure.
The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to food-borne illness.
