When you consider that an average grocery store has about 50,000 products on the shelves, it can be hard to figure out what's best for your family.
Eric Hobday of Self Magazine says it's clear there's a link between what you bring home, and your health. "What you stock your kitchen with is ultimately going to help you achieve body and diet success."
Self Magazine teamed up with registered dietician Willow Jarosh to evaluate a whole range of foods which claim to be healthy. "We looked at calories, the total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, protein, sodium, added sugar. We also looked at the food ingredients."
Readers helped by tasting things like juice, snacks, desserts, and frozen meals.
In all, 400 products were tested and
54 winners selected in a variety of different categories.
For breakfast, the Multi Grain Shredded Spoonfuls from Barbara's Bakery and Van's Low Fat Waffles took the top prize. Hodbay says readers loved the waffles. "They thought they were really toasty and crisp on the outside, but warm and soft on the inside."
The award from best orange juice went to Florida's Natural with Calcium and Vitamin D.
For lunch, Pepperidge Farm's Vitality Bread was the reader's first choice. "This bread met our whole grain and fiber requirements. It has whole grain as the first ingredient," Jarosh said.
Cabot's Reduced Fat Sharp Cheddar was the winner for cheese, and Smucker's Natural Creamy Peanut Butter was also a top pick. One taster thought it was less salty and tasted a little lighter.
For dinnertime, the best salad dressing was Newman's Own Light Honey Mustard.
When it comes to frozen meals, the best meat entrée was the Organic Bistro Turkey Dinner. The best vegetarian meal was Kashi's Black Bean Mango. For seafood, it was Lean Cuisine's Szchehuan Shrimp Stir Fry.
With these prepared meals, Jarosh says they looked to make sure each had enough calories without going overboard on things like sodium and saturated fat.
