N.H. Math Professor Up For Grammy Award

DURHAM, N.H (WBZ) ―

He doesn't have a hit record, but a University of New Hampshire math professor has a Grammy nomination, thanks to his work applying mathematics to restoring and repackaging sound.

Kevin Short was nominated for his role as a mastering engineer in the restoration of a 1949 bootleg wire recording of a Woody Guthrie concert. It is the only known recording of the lengendary folk singer performing before an audience.

Short is renowned for his discovery of Chaotic Compression Technology, which applies a mathematical theory to audio, speech, video and image data. It allows large files to be compressed to a fraction of their size and, with encryption, enables them to be transmitted, such as downloading to a cell phone.

Kanye West topped the list of Grammy nominations with eight, followed by Amy Winehouse with six, when nominations were announced last week.

You can see the 50th Annual Grammy Awards live in high definition on WBZ-TV on February 10, 2008. The broadcast starts as 8pm.
