Families To Pound Pavement For Children's Hospital

BOSTON (WBZ) ― On Sunday there is a special fundraising walk to support the life saving work at Children's Hospital Boston.

The Crowley family of Stoneham will participate in that walk as a way to say "thank you." Molly Crowley was only 20 weeks pregnant when contractions started. She was confined to bed for the next 8 weeks. When her twin girls were born at only 28 weeks, they were extremely small, extremely sick, and the battle for their lives began.

"Sara was one pound, fifteen ounces and Emily was two pounds, nine ounces. They were about the size of a soda can, they were so small," remembers Molly Crowley. "We weren't sure Emily was going to be able to walk or talk or what her outcome was going to be."

Three years later Emily and Sara are doing great, thanks to treatment at Children's Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and follow up care at the hospital. And now, when the girls accomplish something, Molly and Josh Crowley appreciate it all the more.

"Just having Emily running through the yard or Sara blowing bubbles," is a huge thrill according to Molly. "It's special for us. We don't take anything for granted."

To celebrate, the Crowley's are walking as part of the NSTAR Walk for Children's Hospital, to raise money for the hospital that gave them so much. This will be their third year. In the past the girls rode in a stroller. This time they're walking, too.

"They're little miracles and they came out of that experience. Those doctors and nurses saved their lives repeatedly," said Josh Crowley. Molly knew the twins were in good hands when they arrived at Children's. "They were so supportive, so genuine, so compassionate, and so skilled," she said.

Sara and Emily will also celebrate their third brithdays this month.

The NSTAR Walk for Children's Hospital will be held on Sunday, June 8. It kicks off at the Hatch Shell at 10am.
