'Curious' About Relieving Knee Pain
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
One of the most common aches and pain we develop as we get older is in our knees. Sometimes that pain is so severe surgeons have to rebuild the knee joint.
That has one of our viewers curious about one particular approach to repairing knee joints without surgery. Ellen in Tewksbury submitted a question through our
Curiosity web site.
"I'm curious how much scientific evidence supports the claim that glucosamine chondroitin repairs and rebuilds cartilage in knee joints?" Dr. Mallika Marshall answers Ellen's question:
Glucosamine and chondroitin are two separate compounds which are normally found in cartilage and are often marketed together as a dietary supplement for the treatment of arthritis.
To be honest, there isn't an overwhelming amount of data suggesting that either one alone or in combination has a significant effect on pain and function in people with arthritis of the knee. There is, however, limited evidence that these supplements
can help relieve pain and improve function in some people and may even help restore cartilage in the knee.
Still, other studies suggest these supplements
don't work any better than placebo. So, at this point, the jury is still out.
Some experts suggest their patients try glucosamine alone for a few weeks to see if they notice a difference in symptoms. Most will agree the supplements are safe, though people with diabetes or shellfish allergies should avoid them. You should always make sure to tell your doctor if you start taking a dietary supplement.
