Class Eases Stress Of Motherhood

BOSTON (WBZ) ― As a busy working mom, Denise Studley said she constantly felt pressured and overwhelmed. And she believed the stress she was feeling was taking a toll on her two young sons.

"I think the biggest challenge is I feel like I have to do everything," Studley said. "Work, being at home, doing as much as I can."

That's why Denise decided to enroll in the "Calm Mother, Happy Child" program at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The eight-week class teaches moms like Denise relaxation techniques and other coping strategies to help them deal with the pressures of parenthood.

"Motherhood can be a stressful time," the institute's Patty Arcari said. "So the goal is to teach moms strategies to help them manage the stresses and difficulties of motherhood."

Denise says the class has taught her to better prioritize her time so she can really focus on and enjoy the joys of motherhood.

"I'm not perfect," she said, "but I can catch myself when I'm starting to have negative thoughts."

In fact, Denise says she found the class so helpful that not only has she recommended it to other moms, but she's taken it twice herself.
