Nicotine Vaccine May Help Smokers Kick Habit
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
There may soon be new help for smokers who want to kick the habit.
Now a new experimental vaccine is showing promise in clinical trials.
Millions of Americans who want to stop smoking could be a step closer to having a new tool to help kick the habit.
It's not gum, patches or pills but a shot in the arm that delivers a nicotine vaccine.
"You can essentially say that using the vaccine in relationship to a placebo is three times more likely to work," said Dr. Elbert Glover of the University of Maryland.
Elbert Glover is one of the doctors testing the vaccine called NicVAX. Results from the latest phase of a clinical trial - show 16 percent of those taking the highest doses of the vaccine remained smoke free after one year.
The American Cancer Society will celebrate the 31st anniversary of the Great American Smokeout on Thursday, Nov. 15. Americans who smoke and want to quit are urged to call the American Cancer Society's Quitline®, a clinically proven, free telephone-based counseling program, at 1-800-ACS-2345, or to log on to
www.cancer.org/greatamericans, to embark on a personal plan.
