Mass. Swine Flu Cases Approaching 1,000

10th Boston School Closes With High Flu Rates

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Massachusetts health officials have confirmed 69 more cases of swine flu in the state, for a total of 854 since the start of the outbreak.

The Department of Public Health said Friday that four of the new cases required hospitalization. The total number of hospitalizations in Massachusetts because of swine flu has been 57.

More than half of the new cases, 36, were in Suffolk County. More than 600 of the total cases have been reported in Suffolk and Middlesex Counties.

Also Friday, two more schools in the state were closed because of high flu rates.

Donovan Elementary School in Randolph will be closed all next week, Superintendent Richard Silverman announced. Sixty-five students from the school were absent on Friday.

In Boston, Blackstone Elementary will be closed through May 15. Nearly 20 percent of the school's 600 students were absent on Friday. The adjacent Blackstone Community Center will also close.

Blackstone is the tenth Boston Public school to close because of concerns over H1N1. State-wide, more than 30 schools (xls) have had to close their doors in recent weeks because of high flu rates.
