Dentists Say Bad Economy Is Causing Tooth Pain
ARLINGTON (WBZ) ―
Have your teeth been hurting lately?
It could be the economy.
Dentists across Massachusetts are reporting treating more and more patients who've been grinding their teeth lately. "It can lead to a lot of problems," says Dr. Yin Hsu of Boston. "People who grind their teeth are not only wearing down the enamel, but they can also bring on headaches and muscle pain in the jaw area."
The nation's recession is starting to show signs of turning around, but not before taking its toll on our teeth.
Gene McMahon was in his dentist's office in Arlington on Tuesday with a toothache that may have been brought on by grinding. "I think my job is secure, but you never know," said McMahon. "I have twin 6-year olds to think about. And I am worried about the economy... Now, I end up with a toothache."
McMahon's dentist, Dr. George Biron says there are several remedies for grinding, including a custom-made mouth guard that's worn at night. "We're actually seeing people come in with worn out mouth guards, from grinding their teeth during the night," said Dr. Biron.
