Woman Studies Effects Of Exercise On Single Moms

 CBS News Interactive: Healthwatch

DENVER, Colo. (CBS) ― Nobody doubts the benefits of regular exercise, but what impact does it have on struggling single mothers?

In a two-year study lead by psychology student Mari Marsico at the University of Colorado, Denver, single mothers carved time out for themselves. They committed to running, exercising and making healthy choices. In return, they got in better physical shape, but it was their mental well being that really improved.

Sally, a single mother, was in a transitional housing program in Colorado and taking classes online. Along with several other moms, Sally decided to train for Denver Marathon and participate in Marsico's study.

In five months, the moms were able to go the distance and saw dramatic improvement in their daily lives.

"It's almost like they transformed," Marsico said. "The confidence that they exuded after the race and the pride -- they really became different people."

At the finish line Sally, for one, saw the future.

"I know I can accomplish everything I have set out to accomplish," Sally said. "There's nothing gonna stop me now!"

Sally and two other moms ran the full marathon. Fourteen others finished the half marathon. Sally finished her degree and is now a school teacher for special education students and working on her PHD. She is still running.

Marsico will receive a university award for her work Friday. She hopes to continue the program she began with Sally.
