High winds canceled the fireworks display that was to ring in the New Year in Boston, but other festivities went off as scheduled to a crowd of frigid revelers.
First Night organizers got off a
7 p.m. fireworks show on Boston Common, before the weather forced the cancelation of the midnight display.
Bitter temperatures in the teens and chilly winds kept crowds down, but helped maintain First Night's colorfully-lit outdoor ice sculptures.
The National Weather Service reported about 6 inches of snow in Boston as the storm wound down, with up to 11 inches in the southeastern part of the state.
Hazardous driving conditions were reported on Massachusetts highways, and officials urged revelers to take public transportation to First Night activities in Boston.
The city of Worcester canceled its fireworks; New Bedford postponed its fireworks display until Jan. 8, but said other New Year's Eve activities would go on as planned. The town of Chatham, on Cape Cod, canceled its First Night celebration.
