Massachusetts Pulls Through For Salvation Army
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Despite the terrible economy people in Massachusetts have come through big time for the Salvation Army this year.
As of Friday, the Salvation Army was on track to surpass its $3.5 million fund-raising goal. That's a $400,000 increase over last year.
A Salvation Army spokesperson says there's something about the American spirit. When someone is down and out, people respond.
Heartwarming as it may be, organizers warn the rise in people needing their assistance has also surprised them. "The shelters are full, people are coming in for fuel assistance," said Maj. Raphael Jackson of the Salvation Army. "If we get shocked with a really bad winter, utility bills go out of whack, and people can't make ends meet, it may make things even worse."
Because so many more people need help, you'll see the bell ringers out longer than usual.
Christmas Day is usually their last day, but this year they'll collect until New Year's Day.
