Town Surprised By $8,000 For Ice Storm Aid

BOSTON (AP) ― A central Massachusetts town that sustained minimal damage from a December ice storm is receiving nearly $8,000 in federal disaster aid.

Uxbridge selectmen voted to accept the money, but expressed surprise that the town was getting the funds. Uxbridge largely escaped the devastating tree damage sustained by many other communities and was the only town in the region that did not have any power outages during the Dec. 11-12 storm.

One selectman said he couldn't even remember an ice storm in Uxbridge.

In its application for disaster aid, the town manager cited equipment costs and overtime for Department of Public Works employees, as well as material costs for sanding and salting of roads.
