Patrick Asks For Ice Storm Disaster Declaration

BOSTON (AP) ― Gov. Deval Patrick has asked President Bush to declare a disaster in communities hit hard by theĀ ice storm this month that caused widespread damage and long lingering power outages.

If Patrick's request is granted, communities in Worcester, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire and Berkshire counties would be eligible for federal aid covering 75 percent of the costs of repair, reconstruction, debris removal and overtime for first responders.

Patrick said the declaration was needed because of the significant damage and hardship from the Dec. 12 storm.

As many as 2,500 Unitil Corp. electricity customers in northern Worcester County didn't have power as of Monday. But the utility said Wednesday that electricity restoration was "substantially complete."
