Deadly Crash Shuts Down Part Of Route 128

NEWTON, Mass. (WBZ) ― A violent crash claimed the life of a driver and shut down part of Route 128 in Wellesley Wednesday afternoon.

A 2008 Toyota Yariss and tractor-trailer truck were involved in the collision in the southbound lanes near Route 9 around 1 p.m.  The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Officials said the driver of the Toyota lost control and crossed all four southbound lanes and into the median before turning right and crossing back over the roadway.  State police said the car then hit the guardrail on the right shoulder of the road and smashed into the back of a flatbed truck carrying lumber.
The truck was parked in the breakdown lane, and the 27-year-old driver was outside of his vehicle at the time of the wreck securing his load.  He was uninjured in the crash.

State Police closed three lanes of traffic to remove the car, which was heavily damaged.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Crews were looking to re-open the roadway completely later Wednesday afternoon.  In the meantime, traffic was getting by in the left lane on the southbound side of the road.  Traffic coming off the Pike was brought to a crawl and was backed up to Route 2 in Lexington for a time.
