A large bank robber armed with a handgun escaped into the woods in Bellingham Thursday and police quickly launched a massive manhunt that lasted for seven hours.
Police called off the search around 5:15 p.m. Thursday. They believe he is still hiding out in the swampy woods.
The man, described by witnesses as weighing about 300 to 330 pounds, entered the Milford National Bank on Hartford Avenue just before noon. He showed a gun and demanded money.
Police say the suspect ran from the scene.
The suspect is a white man, about 6'2" tall, wearing baggy jeans, a Red Sox hat and a Patriots sweatshirt.
K-9 units were brought in to assist in the search, which took place deep in the woods behind the Stallbrook Marketplace and nearby residential neighborhoods.
Several roads in the area were blocked off for the search.
