It was a rush hour nightmare for thousands of drivers along Route 93 northbound Wednesday evening.
Traffic was backed up for at least 12 to 13 miles because of emergency roadwork, highway officials said.
Massachusetts Highway officials said pavement had been laid earlier in the day near the Merrimack Bridge along the Andover/Methuen line. But by evening it began to buckle, causing unsafe driving conditions that had to be repaired immediately.
Because of the emergency repairs at Exit 46 in Methuen, the breakdown lane, which is usually open during peak traffic hours, was closed, backing traffic up for miles from Route 128 to Andover.
By 7 p.m., traffic smoothed out.
Officials said the road problem happened because crews had over milled the road surface and exposed something that made the road unsafe to drive on.
