99-Year-Old N.H. Author Signs First Book Deal
CONCORD, N.H. (WBZ) ―
A 99-year old New Hampshire man has signed his first book deal.
John Archer of Concord signed a contract with PublishingWorks of Exeter to publish his book of verses "Walking Backward Towards Old Age."
Archer said several years ago, he came across some poems he wrote in 1930, and decided to begin writing again. Before he knew it, he had completed several new verses.
"I started writing and the verses get away from me. They turned serious, and then I had to keep up with them."
Archer said he doesn't want to influence people or teach them anything, but instead his book is just his thoughts.
"I've arrived at the point in life when you can ask questions and there are no answers," he said.
As for advice on living a long life, he's modest about that.
"I have no advice for others, they'll live their own life without advice from me."
Archer had printed his book by himself and was selling it through
MainStreet BookEnds of Warner, New Hampshire.
Last winter, Phil Englehardt of PublishingWorks, was visiting the store and owner Catherine Nevens told him that he had to read Archer's book.
Englehardt said he loved it and signed Archer to a traditional publishing contract. At 99 years and 4 months, Engelhardt said Archer is the oldest author to sign such a deal.
The book is expected to be on store shelves by September, before Archer turns 100.
The price will be $15 and should be available at Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com, and independent bookstores.
Archer is now working on his memoirs, and more verses.
Look for him at book signings this fall!
